Preventive Dental Care

The American Dental Association® recommends that adults and children see the dentist regularly for dental examinations and preventive cleanings. We routinely see our patients every 3-6 months for a thorough dental exam and hygiene care.

During these visits, Dr. Anderson will meet with you to talk about your general health and your goals for your smile. He will carefully examine your teeth, gums, jaw joints and soft tissues to look for any areas of concern and may use dental technologies such as digital dental x-rays, intraoral cameras and laser fluorescence cavity detection to gather more details about the teeth and bone structures and advise you of any conditions that may require treatment.

periodontal care flossing to prevent gum disease

Periodontal (Gum) Disease

When we brush and floss, we remove leftover food particles and bacteria from tooth surfaces and between the teeth. Some areas, however, are not possible to reach with brushing and flossing alone, such as around crowded, misaligned teeth or below the gum line.

  • Gum disease, or periodontal disease, begins when bacteria and tartar deposits accumulate around the teeth in hard-to-reach areas. If the tartar (or calculus) buildup is not removed by the dental hygienist or dentist, this can cause the gums to become inflamed and lead to infection.

  • The major concern associated with periodontal disease is loss of bone support for the teeth. As the infection progresses, it advances and slowly destroys jaw bone. Periodontal bone loss can cause the teeth in the area to eventually become loose and require extraction.

Periodontal disease can be treated non-surgically with a root planing procedure if detected early. After Dr. Anderson gets the area numb with dental anesthetic, the dental hygienist will clean the roots of the affected teeth and remove calculus deposits to reduce bacteria levels and promote healing. Extensive bone loss may require periodontal surgery to correct.

Regular dental examinations and hygiene visits are the key to prevention of periodontal disease. During these appointments, your dental hygienist will polish the tooth surfaces and review tips to help keep your mouth healthy and clean. The hygienist and Dr. Anderson will also measure the areas between the teeth and the gums to look for bleeding gums or deep ‘pockets’ where the gums are pulling away from the teeth; these are indicators of periodontal infection.

Oral Cancer Awareness

Oral cancer is a very dangerous disease that continues to affect a growing number of young and mature adults. During your dental examination visit, Dr. Anderson will check the oral soft tissues, lips, palate and inside of the cheeks to look for unusual sores, bumps or areas of discoloration that may be a warning sign of oral cancer.

Early detection of oral cancer can be life-saving. If you or a family member have a sore or a discolored area inside the mouth or on the lips that has been present for over 2 weeks, please contact Georgia Dental Medicine or your physician to arrange to be seen as soon as possible.

Children's Dental Health

Dr. Chris Anderson and our Georgia Dental Medicine hygienists generally see children for preventive care beginning at 3-4 years old (or when the child can stay safely seated in the dental chair on their own).

Both baby teeth (deciduous) and permanent teeth play an important role in your child's growth and development. We recommend that children and teens see Dr. Anderson and our dental hygienist at least twice a year for a routine check-up and dental cleaning. During these visits, the hygienist will polish your child's teeth and share home care and nutrition suggestions with you.

Dr. Anderson and your dental hygienist may also recommend fluoride treatments or dental sealants for your child to help prevent tooth decay.

In addition to checking for dental cavities, Dr. Anderson will review x-rays of your child's teeth and jaw structures to keep you updated on the eruption and orthodontic alignment of their permanent teeth. Third molars or wisdom teeth generally begin to make an appearance during the teenage years; Dr. Anderson will provide recommendations on wisdom tooth extraction if necessary.

We always want your child to enjoy going to the dentist. Dr. Anderson works closely with local pediatric dentists and orthodontists and will refer your child for specialist care if they have complex dental needs or require orthodontic treatment.

Treatment Planning for Your Dental Health and Smile Appearance

We value your time and always want to be sure that you have a complete understanding of your dental health. During your examination visits, Dr. Anderson will talk with you about your ability to chew, smile and speak. If you are experiencing discomfort with your teeth, facial muscles or jaw joints, he will recommend steps to diagnose and treat any problems so you can enjoy pain-free function.
