Georgia Dental Medicine Cosmetic Dental Procedures

There are a number of dental treatments that can change the appearance of teeth. Many also improve dental health, as with dental implants or dental crowns. In dentistry, this is known as ‘form follows function’. When Dr. Anderson corrects a dental problem such as a broken or missing tooth, he also applies cosmetic dentistry principles to make your smile healthy and esthetically pleasing at the same time. Learn more about restorative dental treatments to rebuild your smile.

Since opening Georgia Dental Medicine in 2003, Dr. Anderson has helped many patients get excited about smiling again with cosmetic dental procedures. Popular cosmetic dentistry treatments offered at our Marietta family and cosmetic dental office include:

Cosmetic Dental Veneers

Cosmetic dental veneers are thin ceramic coverings that are applied to the front surface of teeth to change their shape, shade and appearance. Cosmetic dental veneers are a great option for concealing dark tooth stains, small chips or craze lines in the tooth surface, or to correct a tooth that is slightly rotated or noticeably misshaped.

How are Dental Veneers made?

Using 3D impression technology, Dr. Anderson creates digital models of your teeth and designs your custom dental veneers based on your preferences. Once complete, he sends your models and design to our dental laboratory where his instructions regarding the type of ceramic materials, teeth color/shades, translucency, and shape specifications are followed to fabricate your veneers.

Dr. Anderson recommends dental veneers when the underlying tooth structure is healthy with no evidence of tooth decay or tooth nerve damage that might require a root canal. If a tooth has a broken filling, active decay or old dental work, a dental crown procedure will be necessary to rebuild the tooth and restore bite health.

Cosmetic dental veneers and dental crowns are often used together to accomplish a complete smile makeover. In the case of multiple dental veneers or a combination of cosmetic veneers and crowns, Dr. Anderson may ask our dental laboratory to create a wax model of your planned results so you can ‘preview’ your new smile.

Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a quick and affordable way to make your smile brighter.

Our teeth darken naturally as we age; over time, dark beverages like coffee, red wine, tea and cola, along with smoking and certain medications can also stain our teeth. Professional teeth whitening can break through old stains and make tooth enamel look fresh and vibrant again.

How Teeth Whitening Works:

  • During your dental examination or hygiene visit, we will scan your teeth and create 3D digital models of your smile. (‘Digital’ means no goopy dental putty impressions required!)

  • We have a 3D printer at our Georgia Dental Medicine facility; using your 3D models and the printer software, we can design, shape and print your custom teeth whitening trays at our office.

  • We prefer custom whitening trays because they are more durable and fit more snugly than 1-size-fits-all trays.

  • We will see you for a brief visit to deliver your trays; you will receive two clear plastic whitening trays that fit over your upper and lower teeth.

  • To whiten your teeth, just add a small amount of bleaching gel to each tray and wear the trays for about an hour a day. Within a couple of weeks, your teeth will be noticeably brighter.

We can maintain your whiter smile at your regular hygiene and dental examination visits, and we have touch-up whitening gel refills available to help you keep your smile looking bright and fresh.

Cosmetic Dental Bonding and ‘White’ Dental Fillings

Cosmetic dental teeth bonding procedures may be recommended for making changes to the appearance of front teeth, like closing a gap between teeth or concealing a chipped edge.

Dr. Anderson uses dental composite filling materials for bonding procedures. Dental composite is a soft resin material that is available in a wide range of tooth shades. Cosmetic bonding is considered a ‘direct’ dental procedure, the composite materials adhere and attach directly to the natural tooth surface, so very little drilling (or no drilling) is required to retain the restoration.

Cosmetic dental bonding can usually be completed in one visit:

  • Dr. Anderson shapes and cleans the tooth structure to be bonded to prepare it for the adhesive process.

  • After choosing a composite shade to match your teeth, your dentist will mold the flexible material to the prepared tooth surface and shape your restoration.

  • The hardening process of the composite material is activated and your restoration is bonded to the tooth structure with a special curing light.

  • After the tooth is lightly polished, your composite bonding is complete.

Composite resins are also used in back teeth for ‘white’ fillings to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay or injury.

Cosmetic Dental Crowns

If a tooth has a large broken filling or requires rebuilding of a substantial amount of tooth structure, a dental crown is generally the recommended procedure. Dental crowns cover the entire top of the tooth and are made of ceramic porcelain or a combination of ceramics and fine metals. Dental crowns offer the advantage of greater coverage and increased durability over dental composite fillings.

Dr. Anderson can design your custom cosmetic dental crowns to blend with your smile and create a natural-looking appearance.

Dental Implants

When a tooth is missing, it not only feels a bit awkward and sometimes embarrassing, it can also lead to health problems for your bite and your other teeth. Our teeth work together to distribute the pressure of biting and chewing. When one or more teeth are missing, this creates a strain on the other teeth as well as the jaw joints (TMJ) and facial muscles. Missing teeth can also lead to loss of important jaw bone structure.

Dental implants are screw-shaped titanium inserts that Dr. Anderson places in the jaw bone to serve as a foundation for a replacement tooth. Dental implants offer advantages over other tooth replacement options like dental bridges and dentures in that they promote the growth of healthy jaw bone and don't require drilling on neighboring teeth to hold them in place.

A single implant crown can be used to close the gap left by a missing tooth, or multiple dental implants can be combined with an implant denture to create a lifelike smile appearance and a snug, secure denture fit. Learn more about dental implants.

Would you like to have straighter teeth?

If your teeth are crooked or misaligned and you do not want the hassles of metal orthodontic wires and brackets, you may be a candidate for clear orthodontic aligners.

During your orthodontic consultation, Dr. Anderson will evaluate your overall dental health with a thorough exam and talk with you about the expected outcomes of orthodontic treatment. At Georgia Dental Medicine, your orthodontic treatment is completely digital; using our 3D impression technology and 3D CBCT imaging, Dr. Anderson can create a series of clear aligners to move your teeth into position gradually.

Clear orthodontic aligners make it convenient to straighten your teeth. They are barely noticeable when you smile, and the best part, they are removable, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite foods.
